Fleddermann von Rieste is an independent, family-owned Indiana watch brand, assembled in America. Our founder comes from a strong German heritage rooted in agriculture and metalworking, and that same instinct for quality shapes every hand-assembled watch we build. As a boy, he watched his father care for his own grandfather's watch, wound by hand and worn only on days that mattered. That's the moment he understood a watch could be more than a tool for keeping time.

What does "assembled in America" actually mean?
It means the watch was put together here, by hand, by a person, not that every single part inside it was made here. As an independent American watchmaker, every Fleddermann von Rieste watch is hand assembled and hand regulated in Indiana. We're upfront about that distinction because a lot of brands aren't.
Are Fleddermann von Rieste watches good watches to pass down to your kids?
That's the entire point of the company. Every watch is built to be worn daily, not saved for someday, and backed by a two year full warranty and real service, so it can actually last long enough to become one of the watches to pass down in your own family.

Quartz vs mechanical, which should I buy?
We build both, so we don't have a side to push. A quartz watch is simple and low maintenance. A mechanical watch, whether automatic or hand wound, runs on a wound spring instead of a battery and has more of a hands on relationship with the person wearing it. Neither one is more "real" than the other.
What's the best first mechanical watch?
If it's your first, an everyday automatic watch is usually the easier start, since it winds itself as you wear it instead of asking you to build a new daily habit. The Hanoverian, our American sport watch, is a natural entry point and one of the best automatic watches under $1000 in our lineup.
What's the difference between automatic and hand wound?
An automatic watch, sometimes called a self winding watch, winds itself using the natural motion of your wrist. A hand wound watch needs you to wind the crown yourself, usually once a day. Both are genuine mechanical watches, just with a different daily relationship to the person wearing them.

Is my watch water resistant enough to swim?
Yes. Every Fleddermann von Rieste watch is rated to 10 ATM, which covers swimming, showering, and everyday water exposure. It's not a dive watch built for scuba, but it's genuinely built for real life, not just rain.
Sapphire crystal is the scratch resistant material we use to protect every dial across the line, tougher than the mineral crystal a lot of watches use at this price. Every sapphire crystal watch we build still looks sharp years into wearing it.
What is 316L stainless steel?
It's the steel we use for every case. It resists corrosion and holds up to sweat and daily wear far better than cheaper alloys, which matters if the watch is meant to survive more than a few years.
